Bashkiria authorities will support local varieties and hybrid selection
The head of Bashkortostan signed amendments to the republic’s law on agricultural development concerning state support measures for republican breeders.
“Seed production is a strategic direction. The yield, food quality, and prices on store shelves depend on the seed material.
State support measures will stimulate the development of seed production and contribute to the creation of highly profitable, promising varieties and hybrids, ensuring food security,” commented Chairman of the State Assembly - Kurultai of the Republic Konstantin Tolkachev.
The law will come into force on January 1, 2024.
In the republic, the Bashkortostan Agricultural Research Institute selects crops. There are breeding centers and experimental plots in each climatic zone of the region. There are also 57 seed farms in Bashkiria. As Bashinform News Agency wrote, they account for about 87% of the higher reproduction seeds produced in the republic. In 2022, farms were allocated 80 million rubles in subsidies to purchase original and elite seeds, and in 2023 - 120 million rubles. But support for the breeders themselves is very lacking, industry experts say.
