State Duma discuss transfer of Russia Day celebration on September 21

UFA, 28 March 2018. /Bashinform News Agency, Galiya Nabieva/. The State Duma Committee rejected a bill proposing to transfer the celebration of the Day of Russia from June 12 to September 21, RIA Novosti reported.
Authors of the bill in the explanatory note state that September 21 was chosen because on this day in 1862 in Veliky Novgorod the Emperor Alexander II opened the monument "Millennium of Russia", which marked the millennium of the Russian state founding. Since then, on September 21, Russia celebrated the Day of the Russian statehood. They consider it symbolic that on September 21 (September 8, according to the old style - the Julian calendar) in 1380, the Russian regiments led by Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy won a victory in the Kulikovo field, after which the liberation of Rus from the Mongol-Tatar Yoke began.
The Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Labor, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs Valentina Kabanova noted that the bill on transferring the celebration of the Day of Russia did not find broad support in the society, and the proposed dates are controversial and contradictory. There is also a need for technical revision of the draft law and consultations with the scientific community.
