Bashkortostan State Assembly Speaker solves migration problems of Europe in Athens

The Chairman of the State Assembly of Bashkortostan Konstantin Tolkachev took part in the session of the Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe's on Monitoring, which takes place in Athens, Greece. The agenda of the meeting included a number of reports on the situation of local and regional democracy in Finland, Iceland, Estonia and Malta, as well as observation of elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Committee considered a report on the role of local authorities in dealing with migration issues for its approval at the plenary session of Congress in March 2017. In September 2016, a delegation led by Jean-Claude Frécon, former President of the Congress, visited several refugee camps in the region of Attica for the study of the particular situation of local and regional authorities in Greece.

"The issues of migration policy were actively discussed at the meeting. Unfortunately, there were no ready-made solutions, so the discussions to be continued,” said Konstantin Tolkachev following the results of participation in the international forum. “There were reports on the legal status of refugees, in particular, the need for common interpretation of laws in the countries belonging to the Council of Europe. The Ukraine's position on granting a refugee status to temporarily displaced people was not supported. There are about one and a half million of such people in Ukraine, according to their estimates", said the Chairman of the State Assembly RB.

According to the Speaker of the regional parliament, activities of regional and municipal authorities of Turkey were also discussed in quite detail. The participants of the meeting by a majority vote adopted a resolution obliging the Turkish authorities to establish bodies of authority through elections in accordance with the official documents of the Council of Europe.
