Round-table discussion, devoted to the first all-Mari congress, to be held in Birsk

The round-table discussion, devoted to the 95th anniversary of the first all-Russian congress of representatives of Mari nation, will take place in the town of Birsk on December 7 and many historians, ethnologies, specialists in sphere of international relations, state and public activists of republics of Bashkortostan and Mari-Al and representatives of Russian regions expected to take part in it. Investigation of significance of the first all-Russian congress of Mari nation, historical experience in development and cooperation of Bashkortostan and Mari-Al and in preservation and development of Mari culture and language is the main goal of the conference.

In 1917 representatives of Mari nation, living in on the territories of Volga and Ural had gathered in the town of Birsk to take part in their first congress, which determined the ways of Mari national development and historical role in establishment of Mari sovereignty.

Exhibition of art-projects of Mari painter George Kalitov will be dated to this event. The painter will make a report “Modern art and youth”.

For the reference: according to the population census-2002 604298 Mari people lived in Russia in a whole. At that 312178 Mari people live in Republic of Mari-Al now and 105829 – in Bashkortostan. General tendency to reduction of Finno-Ugric population was registered that time. At the same time in Bashkortostan Mari population on the contrary increased.
