Two Ufa cemeteries received the status of historical-memorial ones

Two oldest cemeteries of Ufa – the Saint Sergey cemetery and the Muslim one – received the status of historical-memorial cemeteries, i.e. they will be protected by the law as monuments. This decision was reached by deputies of Ufa at their last meeting. The deputies have also made the corresponding changes in the Regulations concerning ritual services and burial grounds on the territory of Ufa.
In accordance with these changes any burials on the abovementioned cemeteries are prohibited, except the cases when a burial ground was allocated beforehand, in the times when the cemeteries were still opened.
Burials on Saint Sergey cemetery were made since the middle of the XVIII century. The graves of participants of the Great Patriotic War are located there, including three common graves, where 1300 soldiers are buried. The monument to the victims of political repressions is located in the center of it. The cemetery was closed in 1972.
Many prominent residents of Ufa and Bashkortostan are buried on the Muslim cemetery, located in the south-western part of the city. Two burial vaults of Ufa merchants and the grave of the famous Bashkir writer Mustai Karim are located there.
