Dmitry Medvedev says it is necessary to return direct elections of regional governors

The President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev said that now Russian society was ready to return to direct elections of regional governors, speaking at today’s meeting of the State Council in Kremlin.
“In due time we had to abolish direct elections of regional leaders” – the President of Russia underscored – “Unstable political system, inherited by us since the 90s, needed urgent restructuring and recovery, partially through manual administration. These goals were achieved and separatist tendencies were suppressed. Big political parties could open their factions in all regional parliaments, what we never had before. The system stabilized itself but at the same time certain signs of stagnations became evident”.
In opinion of Dmitry Medvedev it’s high time now to refuse from manual governance, thereby giving regional residents a chance to take part in political life of the country and, correspondingly, the right to elect their leaders themselves.
“Direct elections of governors, free registration of political parties and new order of parliamentary elections prove higher level of political culture in our society” – the President of Russia believes – “Democracy” is not a swearword anymore and it means that its prestige in the country is restored”.
