Rustem Khamitov has commented upon the decision of the Russian Supreme Court concerning the Muslim holidays “Uraza-Bayram” and “Kurgan-Bayram” to the “Echo of Moscow”

The President of Bashkortostan Rustem Khamitov gave an interview to the radio-station “Echo of Moscow”, where he explained his initiative to declare the Muslim holidays Uraza-Bayram and Kurgan-Bayram the days off on the federal level and commented upon the decision of the Russian Supreme Court, which considered the clauses of the Republican law about announcement of the abovementioned holidays the days off as contradictory to the federal legislation and thereby invalid.

“I think that this decision is unfair and it infringes on the rights of all Muslims” – the President RB said – “on behalf of the State Council RB we have already filed the complaint to the Supreme Court of Russia. We ask the Court to abolish the execution of the decision on this case till the end of the proceedings in the court of supervisory authority. Therefore the decision of the Supreme Court on abolition of the Republican law doesn’t yet come into effect. I am sure it will be stopped and the case will be additionally tried already by the supervisory authority, i.e. by the Presidium of the Russian Supreme Court. I am sure we will win the case and this is our first step.

The second question – we asked the deputies of Russian State Duma from Republic of Bashkortostan to come out with the initiative to alter the active Labor Code of Russian Federation and to indicate the position, already indicated by the Russian law about freedom of consciousness and about religious communities, there that Russian regions may make the decisions concerning announcement of the religious holidays the days off self-dependently. This statement is also registered by the State Duma of Russia. I’ve no doubts that the Labor Code will be altered and thereby the conflict will be settled”.

Rustem Khamitov also indicated other steps the leadership of the Republic intends to undertake in case the abovementioned attempts turned out to be abortive. At that the President of Bashkortostan mentioned that he doubted successful and positive consideration of the case not in the least.
