Today is the Day of Slavic literature and culture

May 24 is the Day of Slavic literature and culture and today Slavic nations honor the founders of written language – Cyril and Methodius.

The holy brothers Cyril and Methodius were born in the Greek town of Soluni. They were the Christian monks and created the Slavic ABC on the base of the Greek alphabet, which was substantially changed in order to imitate the Slavic sound system properly. Scientists believe that Cyril and Methodius had invented their ABC in the end of the IX century, approximately in 863. The new alphabet was called “Cyrillic” – after the name of one of the brothers. Cyril and Methodius also translated some religious texts for Slavs – the Gospel, the Psalter and others.

Every year Bashkortostan holds a series of actions, devoted to the Day of Slavic literature and culture. These actions are initiated by the local educational institutions and the Slavic national centers. In 2011 the Days of Slavic literature and culture started in our Republic on May 13. They will last in Bashkortostan till May 29.
