Ufa pretends to the title of the most ancient town in Eastern Europe

Ufa can become the most ancient town on the territory of Eastern Europe, the senior researcher of the Institute of Archeology under the Russian Academy of Sciences Igor Kyzlasov stated at the last press-conference, held by the news agency “Bashinform”.
“The finds, discovered during the archeological dig of the settlement Ufa-II, prove that a big city had been settled here already in the V century AD. There are no other big settlements on the territory of Eastern and Western Europe, except Roman and Byzantine cities, existing since the V century”.
The city, located on the junction of the rivers Ufa and Belaya, is indicated on the medieval Arab and Spanish maps. Plenty of domestic things and jewelry, including those of Byzantine origin, have been discovered on the site of Ufa-II.
“The fact of existence of this big city on the territory of modern Ufa made the archeologists to revise the economic geography of early middle Ages” – Igor Kyzlasov said – “Ufa lies aside from Dnepr and Volga trade ways. Besides, there are no other cities, dated by the V century AD, either on Dnepr or Volga, so the question arises: What had attracted people here? What were the economic prerequisites for appearance of the ancient city on the territory of modern Ufa? It is also important to find out what was the state structure in this city that time”.
