Orthodox Christians celebrate the Ascension Day

Eugene Rakhimkulov
The Russian Orthodox Church is celebrating the Ascension Day today. This day traditionally falls on the 40th day after the Easter and the number of the days, separating two great Christian holidays, is chosen not accidentally. The number 40 is considered the holy number among Christians and it is mentioned still in the Old Testament. The end of all great feats is as a rule concerned with this number and in accordance with the law of the prophet Moses the babies had to be brought by their parents to the church on the 40th day after the birth. So it is of no surprise that the Ascension – Jesus’ entry the Heaven’s Church – falls on the 40th day after Resurrection, i.e. as if after his second birth.
