Young batyrs reminded of the great Bashkir hero Kahym-Tura

Nikolai Ermolenko
The forthcoming belt-wrestling championship RB gives good occasion to remember the unique historical personality, whom this championship is devoted – Kahym-Tura. People composed the song about him. Zagir Ismagilov has written the opera, called “Kahym-Tura”. There are the articles about the song and the opera in the third volume of the Bashkir encyclopedia but there is no a single article about the hero himself. We just know that he was the commander of one of the Bashkir regiments during the Patriotic War 1812, or better to say of one of 28 Bashkir regiments, having been formed by Bashkirs and taken part in the Patriotic War against Napoleon and in the foreign campaigns of Russian army.
According to the documents the hero was called Kahym Murzashev. He had been born in the village Auchevo (at present time this is Sterlitamacsky region of Bashkortostan) and died in 1814, being at the height of his fame. Kahym-Tura was the first Bashkir, having finished the Saint-Petersburg Military Academy. He received the rank of colonel, when he was 22. “Tura” stands for “boss” or “commander” in translation from Bashkir.
We still have no truthful information how Kahym-Tura carried war and nothing is known was he ever rewarded with medals or orders. Bashkir specialists of local lore have just managed to find out the places and the approximate dates of his birth and death. There is the legend that his compatriots after the death of his commander saved his racer and returned it back to the village Auchevo. After the death the horse was buried with solemn ceremonies.
The father of Kahym-Tura – Murdash Tuisin – had laid a new village not far from Auchevo, later called Murdashevo. Kahym-Tura had left a son, 6-year old Khabibulla. The data about 40-year-old Khabibulla is registered in 1850, so there are all grounds to believe that he continued his clan. And today some people in the village believe that they are the descendants of Kahym-Tura.
On August 19, 2008, the stele in the honor of his memory was solemnly opened in the motherland of the hero of the Patriotic War 1812, in the village Auchevo.
