Meteorite fell in Russia

Татьяна Аксютина

Residents of the village of Olekminsk and the city of Lensk in Yakutia were lucky enough to see a fascinating spectacle on Wednesday night — a bolide flashed across the sky. Social networks are filled with footage taken by eyewitnesses and CCTV cameras.

According to the European Space Agency, the object's size did not exceed 70 cm. Such meteoroids usually burn up completely in the atmosphere.

According to the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations, the rock passed above the atmosphere.

"The safety of the population was not violated," the department emphasized. "Residents of the Olekminsk and Lensk districts could observe a comet-like tail and flashes this night."

As scientists had predicted, the flash occurred at 1.14 local time (19.14 Moscow time).
