Accident at POLIEF plant: what is known by now

UFA, 10 October 2019. /Bashinform News Agency, Rozaliya Valeeva/ translated by Tatiana Aksyutina/.
On the evening of October 9, an accident happened at the POLIEF plant - the wall of the tank with industrial effluents collapsed. The effluents fell into the adjacent territory. The damaged tank is shut off, effluents in the amount of 12 thousand tons are pumped into reserve tanks.
Three laboratories operate on the scene. As it became known, eight tons of chemicals spilled from the damaged tank.
At the moment, emergency recovery work is being carried out in the production area. More than 260 people, 140 units of equipment are involved in the elimination of the consequences. An additional 90 units of municipal special equipment arrived from Ufa to eliminate the effects of the incident.
According to the information of Municipal Unitary Enterprise “Ufavodokanal”, the quality of drinking water is under control, the water is examined every hour by the Center for Analytical Quality Control by 105 indicators.
The maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances are not exceeded. There are no victims and injured. Nothing threatens people's health, according to the Ministry of Emergencies for Bashkortostan.
On behalf of the Head of the Republic Radiy Khabirov, an operational headquarters was created. An interagency commission at the site held an emergency meeting to find out all the causes of the accident. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues.
According to reports, settlements and enterprises do not fall into the zone of possible exposure to organic effluents. There are no water intakes along the discharge path. As the previous discharge showed, these effluents quickly dissolve and decompose in water.
There is no danger to the inhabitants of the republic. The situation at the wastewater treatment plant of the enterprise does not pose a hazard to the residents of Bashkiria, the Polief plant reports.
As of 9.40 a.m. on October 10, no excess of chemicals was detected in drinking water: phenol, chloroform, and others, Ufavodokanal reports.
Representatives of the republican prosecutor’s office went to the site to investigate the causes of the incident. The design features of the tank are considered as one of the possible causes.
During the night, a two-meter dam was built here, which restrained chemical emissions from the POLIEF enterprise, the commission created after the emergency informs.
Experts are sure that chemical drains will not leak through such an obstacle. Soil serves as a filter where chemicals linger. Ecological posts on the Kazmyshly and Izyak rivers are established, the chairman of the State Committee for Emergencies, Farit Gumerov, reports.
According to Polyef’s management, the effluents included industrial wastes, for example, terephthalic acid. They tend to dissolve in water after some time. Now the company pumps out what remains in the destroyed tank into the neighboring reservoirs. Wastewater treatment plants are operating normally.
According to the press service of the company, it will be ready to compensate for potential environmental damage. An emergency mode has been introduced at the plant.
The Bashinform Agency monitors the situation.
