In Ufa, sanitary felling of firs will be necessary. This is the only way to combat the Ussuri polygraph, which has begun to destroy Ufa's fir plantings. This was announced at a press conference at City Hall by Alfiya Yusupova, Deputy Director of the Bashkir branch of Rosleszashchita, and Maxim Shcherbakov, Chief Forester of Ufa.
So far, two hotspots have been identified: at the corner of Agisha and Mendeleyev Streets and in Gafuri Park near the Ferris wheel. Experts noted that the disease has little potential to spread, as there are few cases in Ufa. However, treating them for the pest with chemicals is impossible. Since they will inevitably become infected and die, the trees will have to be removed. "This pest is terrible; nothing can stop it. It came from the South Ural Nature Reserve, where fir trees are abundant, and the infestation rate is 50%," commented Alfiya Yusupova.
Also, at the press meeting, it was announced that a sanitary felling of 1.7 hectares of spruce trees along Druzhby Narodov Avenue, which are infested with bark beetles, is planned. Birch trees will replace them; these trees are fast-growing and will soon restore the area's ecology.
