Izvestia learned that the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation plans to cancel the import duty on tomatoes during the year's first half. The authorities are ready to take these measures to saturate the market and prevent a significant increase in prices for fruits and vegetables.
The measure will affect fresh and chilled tomatoes; the import quota at zero duty will be 130 thousand tons. At the same time, the benefit will not apply to ribbed, oblong, and cherry-shaped tomatoes, medium-fruited and large-fruited. The most budget-friendly type – round tomatoes – will receive support.
Depending on their type, duties on tomatoes are 10–15%.
Traditionally, prices for greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers rise significantly in winter, according to their production costs.
For example, in Bashkiria, according to Bashkir Statistical Agency, the average price of 1 kg of tomatoes as of December 25, 2023, was 186 rubles; a year ago - 118 rubles. On August 28, 1 kg of tomatoes cost 72 rubles.
