

According to the Department of Cash Circulation of the Bank of Russia, the cash in the hands of citizens as of January 1 amounted to 16.4 trillion rubles - 2.3 trillion rubles more than a year earlier.
A surge in demand for cash was observed twice during 2022. The first time - in late February - early March, the second - in September. In October, the cash requests began to decline. Demand for cash also increased in December, traditionally before the New Year.
As for the structure of cash, the share of 5,000-ruble banknotes in the total number of banknotes increased (from 33% to 37%), while the share of 1,000-ruble banknotes (from 22 to 20%) and 100-ruble banknotes (from 17 to 16%) decreased.
