Russian President Vladimir Putin extended the Russian counter-sanctions by his decree until 2023. They were introduced in 2014 and involve an embargo on the supply of a number of European food products to Russia.
As part of the food embargo, meat, sausages, fish and seafood, vegetables, fruits and dairy products from the European Union (EU), the USA, Australia, Norway, Canada and Ukraine fell under the ban in Russia. It also provides for the destruction of all agricultural products and raw materials imported in violation of counter-sanctions. During the first five years of the restrictions, the Rosselkhoznadzor destroyed 36.17 thousand tons of sanctioned products.
The EU imposed anti-Russian sanctions in July 2014 after the annexation of Crimea to Russia, and also because of the situation in Ukraine. The sanctions include restricting access to the EU capital market for Russian defense and energy companies, an embargo on the arms trade and the supply of dual-use goods to Russia, and restricting the Russian side's access to certain technologies in the oil and gas sector.
