Kurultay RB set task to analyze drinking water for dioxins in Ufa

A task was set to organize in Ufa a constant analysis of drinking water for dioxins at a meeting of the expert council of the State Assembly-Kurultay RB.

Currently, the most significant volume of dioxin and dioxin-containing waste in the world is located in the territory of the bankrupt Ufakhimprom plant, located above the main southern water intake in Ufa.

After stopping production in 2004, new hazardous substances ceased to be produced at Ufakhimprom but previously accumulated waste and pollution is a huge problem. At the time of the enterprise shutdown, the main danger was posed by 142.9 hectares of contaminated territory, where former production workshops literally soaked with dioxin are still standing, as well as 500 thousand cubic meters of hazardous chemical waste are collected in eight sludge collectors.

According to Alexander Zherebtsov, deputy head of the RF Rospotrebnadzor for the Republic of Bashkortostan, Ufa water is tested only for phenol, which is not found in samples. At the same time, according to analyzes carried out by the Research Institute for Life Safety in 2008, the content of dioxins in the soil of the territory of the Ufakhimprom plant exceeded the maximum permissible concentration by 44 times. The analysis for dioxin is not carried out due to its high cost. However, during the expert discussion, it was stated that modern technologies could significantly reduce the cost of tests. In addition, in the opinion of the deputies of the Kurultay RB, possible confirmation of the fact that even small doses of dioxins are found in Ufa drinking water can significantly accelerate receiving federal funds for the rehabilitation of the production area and sludge storage facilities of Ufakhimprom.
