Forest tenants develop only half of allocated plots in Bashkiria

The total stock of wood in Bashkiria is 770 million cubic meters. At the same time, the annual permitted harvesting volume, the so-called calculated cutting area, is about 1.2% of the total volume. Moreover, over the years, the development of the calculated cutting area does not exceed 30-35%. Thus, last year, 2.9 million cubic meters of wood was harvested, or 30.5% of the possible volume.

“In this connection, the forests overripe, the risk of fires, the spread of forest diseases increases significantly; there is no possibility to carry out a full replacement of forests. Even though tenants have one-third of the calculated cutting area in use - 3.3 million cubic meters of forest, only half of it is developed and it is basically valuable coniferous wood”, said the Minister of Forestry of Bashkortostan Marat Sharafutdinov in his speech at the Republican Forest Forum, which was held on March 1 in the village of Karaidel.

According to him, last year their department placed more than 1 million cubic meters of wood for short-term auctions, and less than half were able to be sold although this is a plus by 62% to the year 2017. The minister believes that with the existing structure of the forest raw material base, the topic of the usual cutting of coniferous wood into planks and timber has exhausted itself.

“Today we need the most efficient use of low-grade wood. High value-added products are in demand. This is, above all, the development of board production, alternative fuels, wood chemistry, production of wood-polymer composites and other products that are in demand both in the domestic market and abroad that ultimately will lead to an increase in the income of the republic, ”said Sharafutdinov.

In the meantime, the forest industry provides too little revenues to the budget of the republic. Last year, they amounted to only 230 million rubles. The minister was sure that this figure could be increased at least twice. As one of the options, an introduction of the timber exchange trade is considered by the ministry.
