Bashkortostan Transport Committee will search for investor to launch high-speed tram in Ufa

The capital of Bashkortostan is one of the few million-plus cities that does not have its own high-speed public transport. Timur Mukhametianov, the Chairman of the State Committee for Transport, said that the department was considering three options for the development of high-speed electric transport in Ufa: underground-overhead like in Volgograd, a monorail like in Moscow or the Istanbul variant – a metrobus. The most preferred option is the construction of high-speed tram lines.

“We have won a corresponding grant from the BRICS Development Bank. It will be our consultant for the implementation of this investment project. And in 2019 we will be looking for an investor. We are working in conjunction with the Ministry of Transport of Russia”, said Timur Mukhametianov at a meeting of the relevant committee of the State Assembly of Bashkiria.

A pre-construction project of the high-speed tram in Ufa was estimated at 6-7 billion rubles. For the first time, Ufa residents heard about it in the spring of 2013. It was planned to finance the project with the involvement of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Deforestation began in the course of the project, which caused a great public outcry, which ultimately led to a halt in the works.
