Bashkiria cycling activists appealed to Radiy Khabirov

UFA, 23 November 2018. /Bashinform News Agency, Azat Gizatullin/ translated by Tatiana Aksyutina/. The organizer of the 1000 Cyclists Day, one of the largest cycling parades in Russia, and the founder of the Bashkir Union of Cyclists Stanislav Syrygin wrote a letter to Radiy Khabirov asking him to assist in approving the republican program for the development of bicycle transport infrastructure and support a project of a bicycle and ski center construction in Ufa.
The draft of the republican program was developed by cycling movement activists in 2018 and submitted to the State Committee RB for Transport and Road Facilities.
Since 2014, discussions regarding a large Ufa bicycle ring construction have been held. In 2015, 24 million rubles were spent on design work, taking into account state expertise from the budget. However, this project remained ink on paper due to the difficult financial situation of the city. Then an idea of building a bicycle-ski center emerged, where city residents could go in these sports without risk.
Investors were attracted to the project, after two years of negotiations with the administration of Ufa, in the summer of 2018 an application was submitted to conclude a concession agreement for the construction of a cycling center. The project provides for investing 200 million rubles in the creation of a universal bicycle-ski sports complex to be operated by a concessionaire for 30 years, and then transferred to the city. At the moment there is no clear understanding of the prospects of this project, the administration of Ufa also has not yet shown its position on the construction of the cycling center.
According to a sociological survey conducted by activists of the Ufa cycling movement over the past four years, the number of cyclists in the capital of Bashkiria has increased by 37%.
Due to the survey, an average Ufa cyclist is a person under 30 with a regular income. He/she owns one bike that he bought in the last five years and prefers to use it only in summer.
The authors of the study are confident that in Ufa there are prospects for the development of a bicycle as a vehicle, minimum conditions should be met - bicycle parking lots, a network of bicycle paths maintained in good condition - and citizens will begin to ride bicycles.
This is confirmed by the survey data from the Superjob research center. 49% of the respondents from Ufa are ready to go to work by bicycle if appropriate conditions are created for this.
