Ufa ranks 6th in competitiveness ranking of 13 million-plus cities

Ufa ranked sixth among 13 Russian million-plus cities and eighth including another five cities with a population of over 600 thousand in the rating of competitiveness of cities, based on an analysis of economic, social and financial indicators for 2017.

The data are published in the draft Social and Economic Development Strategy of Ufa until 2030. The leader of the competitiveness rating in almost all indicators considered in 2017 was Tyumen. Yekaterinburg and Krasnodar took the second place due to the balanced indicators of the economic, social and financial spheres. The fourth place of the rating was shared by Kazan and Rostov-on-Don.

As noted in the draft Strategy, according to most social indicators, Ufa occupies an average position in the list of million-plus and sub-million cities, which does not correspond to the level of economic development of the city and its potential. According to the authors of the Strategy, the problem of imbalance in the development of the economic and social spheres is relevant to the city.

With a population of 1.131 million people, Ufa is in the last place among million-plus cities in terms of housing, which is only 23.7 square meters per person. As the lower threshold value of the specific provision of housing for each family member, including those planned for the birth of children, is 25 square meters.

In the course of eight years, the capital of Bashkortostan occupied 1-2nd positions in terms of natural population growth, but lost its leading position last year, having taken the eighth line. The proportion of unemployed in the total population of the city remains high.

At the same time, the economic situation turns out to be significantly better than the social one - by most indicators of economic development Ufa takes place in the top 5 of the competitiveness rating. In terms of labor productivity, the capital of Bashkortostan is in the top three cities with a population of over million-plus and sub-million cities. Ufa, in terms of investments in fixed capital, improved its competitive positions (moving from sixth to fourth place). In terms of the balanced financial result of organizations, the city reached a leadership position last year.

The authors of the draft Strategy conclude that in order to increase competitiveness in the medium and long-term, Ufa needs to level a gap in the social sphere.
