Forestry complex can become economic growth driver in Bashkiria: experts

UFA, 13 December 2017. /Bashinform News Agency, Olga Murtazina/.On December 12, in Moscow, the Forum of the Timber Industry Complex "LPK 360°" was opened. The Forestry Development Strategy of Bashkiria, developed by the specialists of the Republican Forestry Ministry and Industry Ministry, scientists of the Institute of Strategic Studies of the Academy of Sciences RB will be presented there. At the First Forum on the Development of the North-East of Bashkortostan, which was held recently in the Salavat District, the Strategy was presented by one of the experts - the rector of the Ural Forestry University, Andrey Mehrentsev. The main thesis of the project is a maximum use of the rated cutting area and the development of deep processing.

For comparison, the rated cutting area in the Sverdlovsk Region (the area of the region is 194.8 thousand square kilometers) is 23 million cubic meters: Lithuania and Latvia (cumulatively 130,000 sq. Km.) - 20 million cubic meters. Bashkiria with an area of 143.6 thousand square km can cut down 9 million cubic meters of raw materials, but in reality, it produces much less.

Andrey Mekhrentsev stressed that a joint work of the Ministry of Forestry, responsible for forestry and logging, and the Ministry of Industry, which should introduce high-end technologies, should be organized according to the strategy. This will allow obtaining products that will be in demand in domestic and foreign markets. "In this sense, all competencies from cutting to high wood chemical technologies are available in the republic. There are manufactures that are loaded with local raw materials. For example, there is no enterprise equivalent to «Kronospan» in the Sverdlovsk region and this holds back the volumes of wood processing ", the expert said.

The market of plywood and slabs has a great export potential. "The forest sector of the economy can provide good tax revenue, customs payments. That is a large synergetic layer that can become a growth driver. So far a profitability of the forestry sector in Bashkiria is constituted by payments for the use of the resources. And this is wrong", the expert believes. "The republic deserves to become a pilot project in the country to introduce an intensive model of forest management", concluded Andrey Mehrentsev.
