Domestic lines terminal modernization of Ufa Airport will begin this year - Rustem Khamitov

The modernization of the domestic lines terminal of the Ufa Airport will begin this year, the head of Bashkiria Rustem Khamitov said in an interview with the "Transport Rossii" newspaper. "It is necessary to increase the airport's carrying capacity to 3.5-4 million passengers per year, so that we have the passenger traffic capacity for 15-20 years ahead. Now we serve 2.5 million passengers, occupying the 8-9 position in the Russian Federation," the head of the region informed. "Today flights from Ufa to Kazan, Tyumen, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Orenburg and other cities enjoy steady demand, which was not yet observed three or four years ago. We understand that the volumes of inter-regional traffic should increase", he said.

Rustem Khamitov noted that the republican authorities did not plan to sell the Ufa Airport or to attract private investors to its development. This is a strategically important facility that provides 150-200 million rubles of profit per year.

Rustem Khamitov recalled that the international terminal of the air-hub and the airfield were modernized in preparation for major international events in 2015 - the SCO and BRICS Summits. "Now we have one of the best runways certified for the second category of ICAO, which is capable of accommodating aircraft of all types, including super-heavy ones. Taxiways, parking lots, treatment facilities, the airfield facilities are all at the highest level", the head of the region said.
