January 27 - International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated today worldwide. This well-established term called the mass extermination of the Jewish population by Nazis in 1933-1945. Then 60 percent of Jews living in Europe were subjected to systematic persecution and annihilation in the concentration camps. In the former Soviet Union nearly three million Jews were killed by the Nazis in WWII.
It is considered that the Holocaust killed one third of the Jewish population in the world.
On November 1, 2005 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that declared January 27 as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This date was chosen because on this day in 1945 the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi death camp Auschwitz -Birkenau in Poland. During the existence of this concentration camp according to various estimates, from 1.5 to 2.2 million people were killed there. The initiators of the adoption of the resolution on the International Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust were Russia, Israel, Canada, Australia and the USA, and their coauthors - more than 90 states.
Today, the UN General Assembly has developed a number of educational programs aimed to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust will forever preserve in the memory of succeeding generations and will help to prevent future acts of genocide. Jews living in Ufa, always remember the date of January 27. In memory of the victims they arrange musical and poetic lectures, creative meetings.
