November 29 - World Buy Nothing Day and "Black Friday"
Every year in late November, people in many countries of the world refuse from any purchases, in a sign that excessive consumption is a dangerous social trend. The Buy Nothing Day is celebrated on the first Friday after the American Thanksgiving Day, which is the traditional start of Christmas sales worldwide. According calend.ru, this day stores get from 20 to 50 percent of annual revenue. This November Friday is called "black". In 2013, it falls on November 29.
The initiative to refuse from any purchases was made by Canadian journalist of Estonian origin Kalle Lasn in 1992. In his opinion, the cause of the financial crisis must be sought in the culture of excess and mindless consumption.
In 2001, the campaign has gained world-wide scope. The Buy Nothing Day, in addition to Mexico, Canada and the United States was conducted in 55 countries. Currently, 10 states more joined to similar actions. Russia is not among them so far. "Black Friday" in Russia is scheduled for December 6 in 2013, according to the online publication. Even a special webportal is created. On this day, during 24 hours from 30 to 90 percent discounts will be given for many goods. The action starts at midnight and ends at 23.59. Online stores participate in the sale; discounts will be applied to everything that can be bought on the Internet.
