Karim Yaushev: “Land mustn’t be regarded as a commodity”

Our society isn’t yet ready for land purchase and sale for today, the journalist Karim Yaushev stated at the last conference in Ufa.
“In particular, agrarians aren’t ready for this” – he underscored – “We may hold a referendum to this subject today: do people want land to be either sold or purchased? I think not only agrarians but the majority of urban citizens will say no to this idea. Now land is regarded as a commodity but in reality this is absolutely another category”.
The Professor of the Bashkir State Agrarian University David Lukmanov explained why the land rent was so low in Russia. According to him the main reason is that the Russian agrarian sector represents the territory with low incomes.
“The value of land is determined by its yield” – he said – “And we can’t stand the competition with foreign agrarian producers. About 40% of the agricultural output is imported, so we have to raise the profitability of the agrarian sector first”.
