The unit for sterilization of mercury-containing lamps started working in Ufa

The scientific-research institute for vital activity security under the Ministry of nature management and ecology RB put the modernized unit for sterilization of the mercury-containing lamps into exploitation.

The press-service of the Ministry of nature management and ecology RB reports the mercury is considered a dangerous chemical substance (the first class of danger) and the problem of its sterilization was also of high actuality for the Republic. The new unit permits to convert this dangerous substance into a vaporized state. The utilization of the lamps occurs due to transformation of mercury into the products, suitable for further transportation and treatment. The modernized unit is able to utilize about three thousand mercury-containing lamps daily, the director of the institute Faiz Khizbullin reports.

“In a whole the institute utilizes about 10% of the mercury-containing lamps all over the Republic and the city enterprises are our main purveyors” – the director says.

The organization of collection of such lamps from the budget institutions: schools, hospitals and kindergartens – is considered one of the main aims for today. The institute receives the burnt-out mercury lamps as well as the out-of-work medical thermometers from the population and the number of the citizens’ appeals is growing up every day. “We intend to open special collection stations for population” – Faiz Khizbullin says.
