May 20 is the World Metrology Day

The World Metrology Day is celebrated everywhere on May 20. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures has reached the decision concerning establishment of this holiday in 1999 – in the memory about signing of the international Metric Convent on May 20, 1875. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures was established in accordance with this Convent. This holiday is celebrated in Russia since 2005.
The World Metrology Day symbolizes the recognition of the results of the professional activity of the metrologists all over the world for creation of the unified metrological space and for the provision for the unity of all measurements.
More than 10 thousand people are engaged in provision for the unity of measurements in Bashkortostan. These people work in different spheres of activity: in science, production, service, agriculture, nature management, medicine and construction.
The II Moscow international symposium of metrologists and the VI specialized exhibition of gages, test and laboratory equipment “Metrology-2010” will be opened on Tuesday, May 18, and Bashkortostan will be represented there by the “Center of standardization, metrology and certification RB”. The slogan of the World Metrology Day-2010 is “Measurements in science and technique: the bridge to innovations”. In accordance with the slogan the specialists of the Center make stress on development of new directions in metrology, on participation of the Republic in realization of the federal goal-oriented program “Development of the infrastructure of nano-industry in Russian Federation in 2008-2010” and in designing of the global navigation system.
The Center of standardization, metrology and certification RB has designed the unique laboratory for calibration of the gages for electromagnetic fields. It is meant for checking and calibration of the gages for measuring of electrical and magnetic fields within the range of frequencies from 5 hertz to 400 kilohertz and for the measurement of electrostatic fields. These gages are used for control of the level of electromagnetic fields, which influence upon people and nature grows up every day.
The most different branches of industry, trade, health protection and agriculture are well-developed in Bashkortostan and the range of the gages, used here, is extraordinary wide. New directions in metrology are developed by the Center of standardization, metrology and certification RB, taking all needs of the Republican enterprises in calibration of the gages into account. The Center and its offices in Sterlitamac, Oktyabrsky, Neftekamsk, Beloretsk, Birsk and Sibay are supplied with the standard and comparison equipment and Republican enterprises can calibrate their gages, even the newest ones, not leaving the Republic.
