Economic crisis affected women more than men

Women suffer from the crisis more than men. This is the opinion of the doctor of sociological sciences Flura Burkhanova, ventilated at the expanded meeting of the permanent commission re gender policy of Bashkir Trade-Union Federation Council.

“Though the full-fledged monitoring of labor market from the point of view of gender problems is rather difficult because there is no such statistical data in the country we can say that the situation we face in 2008-2009 is in many respects close to the crisis of 1998” – Flura Burkhanova said – “Thus, the level of officially registered unemployment among women during the crisis is much higher than among men and this fact is the evidence that women are less competitive than men and they face harder difficulties during the crisis”.

One more reason, which negatively affects women during the crisis, is connected with the fact that solving the problem who has to be dismissed and who can work further the employers often decide this question to men, motivating their decision that men have to keep their families. As a result women are forced into the secondary and informal labor sector: this is the retail trade in the markets, network marketing etc.

The difference in earnings of men and women during the crisis also became wider. Thus, earnings of women in 1998 made 78,5% of the men’s earnings on average. Now this index in different Russian regions makes 46-52%.

In opinion of Flura Burkhanova the solution of the main part of the problems, connected with more negative influence of the crisis upon women than upon men can be provided by the trade-union organizations.
