On November 22, 2023, the Monte Carlo Opera hosted the premiere of the opera Don Carlos, directed by Massimo Zanetti and Davide Livermore. Ildar Abdrazakov played the role of King Philip II of Spain.
After 20 years, one of Giuseppe Verdi's most iconic operas returned to Monaco, presenting audiences with a unique combination of historical costumes from the 16th century, Goya's paintings, and digital technology.
According to the opera house director, Cecilia Bartoli, the choice of opera was determined by the themes of friendship, love, and power. To convey the fullness of the feelings implied by Verdi, Bartoli approached the choice of performers with special attention.
Ildar Abdrazakov's (Phillip II) stage partners were Sergei Skorokhodov (Don Carlos), Arthur Ruchinski (Rodrigo), Alexey Tikhomirov (The Inquisitor), Joyce El-Hurry (Elizabeth Valois), Varduhi Abrahamyan (Princess Eboli).
