The Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia is annually celebrated on April 2. On this day in 1996, the presidents of the two states signed an agreement, “On the Formation of the Community of Russia and Belarus”.
The participants of the solemn event were greeted by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Vener Galiakbarov. They read out a congratulatory address from the Director of the Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexei Polishchuk:
“Our peoples are firmly fastened by centuries-old fraternal ties based on common historical roots, traditions, spiritual and cultural values. Since the end of the last century, Russia and Belarus have been systematically moving along the path of integration interaction within the framework of the union state. Consistently strengthening strategic partnership in all areas, we create additional opportunities for unlocking the potential of the two countries economies, jointly ensuring the security and well-being of the citizens of Russia and Belarus,” the welcome address says.
Bashkortostan and Belarus have long-standing friendly relations. The project “Preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of Belarusian migrants in Bashkortostan” received support from the Foundation for Assistance to Civil Society. A book has been published containing materials on the history of the native land about outstanding people. More than 17.5 thousand representatives of Belarusian nationality live in Bashkortostan.
Since 1996, the “Republican National Cultural Center of the Belarusians of Bashkortostan” has been operating in Baltika, Iglinsky District, and the Belarusian Historical and Cultural Center has been working at the House of Friendship of Peoples.
The Belarus Embassy has operated in Bashkortostan for more than 22 years. As the head of the branch of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Russian Federation, Artur Karpovich emphasized that everything is being done to reduce this space despite the long distance and the need for more information components. News agencies have signed agreements so that television and radio can exchange programs and unique films. Artur Karpovich also read out a congratulatory address from the Extraordinary Plenipotentiary Representative of the Republic of Belarus in the Russian Federation, Dmitry Krutoy:
“April 2 has been a symbol of the unity of two fraternal peoples for more than a quarter of a century, having common pages of history, a similar culture, sharing and preserving traditional family values. Today, Belarus and Russia are joining efforts to counteract external pressure, defend their national interests, and solve complex problems by introducing new principles for the functioning of economies. There is an active dialogue between Belarus and Russia across the political and humanitarian cooperation spectrum: science and culture, education, and medicine. We already have significant results in all areas of cooperation, which our countries can be proud of. I am convinced that by joint efforts, Belarus and Russia will reach an even more qualitatively new level of development. I will not be mistaken if I say that human ties and relationships significantly contribute to bilateral cooperation. Our Diasporas and national associations play a key role in this.”
The event was complemented by a thematic exhibition prepared by the Belarusian Historical and Cultural Center, where samples of folk art were presented. Also, as part of the event, the National Library of A.Z. Validi organized a book exhibition, "Russia and Belarus: a common history, a common destiny", which presented books on the history, culture, and folklore of the Belarusians of Bashkortostan, books of Bashkir front-line writers published in Belarus.
