Archaeologists begin excavating unique monument of Bronze Age in Trans-Urals

On June 28, in the Baymaksky region, a united, complex archaeological expedition will begin its work in the Irendyk Museum-Reserve. Archaeologists are exploring the fortified settlement of Selek, a unique monument of the Bronze Age.

The main task is to study the structure of the monument and the material culture of the settlement inhabitants. In addition, the expedition aims to develop the territory of the Irendyk Museum-Reserve. The expedition was organized by the Research & Production Center for the Protection and Use of Immovable Objects of the Republic's Cultural Heritage in conjunction with the Institute of History and Public Administration of Bashkir State University and the R.G. Kuzeev Institute of Ethnological Research.

The object of the excavation was not chosen by chance. Until recently, the settlement of Selek was considered the second circular settlement of the Bronze Age in Bashkortostan, belonging to the monuments of the Arkaimov circle or the western periphery of the "Country of Cities". In 2020, specialists of the center by remote methods identified 2 more similar monuments in the Abzelilovsky district.

The "Country of Cities" - settlements clearly oriented to the cardinal points, were built about 4000 years ago in the interfluve of the Urals and Tobol. Remnants of cities, united by a single technology and design, are scattered in the territory of modern Chelyabinsk and Orenburg regions, the Bashkir Trans-Urals, and Kazakhstan. Objects in Bashkortostan belong to its western periphery. Here, over 300 archaeological monuments are concentrated on a small closed territory of 25 thousand hectares. Among them, there is a fortified settlement of the Bronze Age Ulak, with a rounded shape and radial arrangement of dwellings, a similar settlement of Selek-1, and many mounds and settlements.
