International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO on November 17, 1999. It is celebrated annually in February since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date was chosen to commemorate the events that took place on February 21, 1952, in Dhaka (now the capital of Bangladesh). There the students went to a protest march in defense of their native Bengali language and died from police bullets.
