Russian and foreign rock art restorers will gather in Ufa

On February 14-17, Russian and foreign experts in the field of rock art restoration will come to the capital of Bashkortostan. The scientific and production center for the protection and use of immovable objects of the cultural heritage of Bashkortostan together with the Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve "Shulgan-Tash Cave" will hold an expert meeting. The event will discuss issues related to the conservation, monitoring, and documentation of the Shulgan-Tash Cave.
The meeting will be held as part of the preparation of the nomination dossier and the management plan for the Shulgan-Tash Cave Rock Painting object for submission to the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2020.
Among the invited were Elena Levanova, head of the Paleo-Art Center of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Aleksey Rogozhinsky, leading researcher at the A. Margulan Institute of Archeology of Kazakhstan, Eudald Guillamet, cave painting restorer from Andorra, Yuri Dublyansky, privately-associated professor of the University of Innsbruck, and others.
The purpose of the meeting is to identify the threatening factors of cave paintings, formulate goals and methods of conservation, monitoring, and documentation to develop a concept for preserving the nomination object and conservation plan.
On February 14, the event will begin with a meeting of members of the initiative group and discussion of the work plan for finalizing the nomination dossier.
On February 15, an extended meeting is planned together with representatives of the Government RB and "Bashkultasledie", which will be held at the National Museum RB.
On February 16, specialists will visit the sites where contact research methods were previously used, archaeological pits, and the cave monitoring system. In the afternoon, in Murat-Tugay, a discussion of threatening factors and key indicators for monitoring the state of cave paintings will take place. The Shulgan-Tash documentation standard and a long-term conservation and monitoring plan will also be defined.
