Kurai may be registered as Bashkiria brand in 2018

The Bashkir national musical instrument - kurai - may be registered as a brand of the region in 2018, Liliya Gumerova, the first deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee for Science, Education and Culture told the «Parlamentskaya Gazeta».

Following the meeting of the Council on Intellectual Property at the Federation Council, the Speaker of the Chamber, Valentina Matvienko, instructed each senator to take care of the local brands registration over the next year.

Liliya Gumerova intends to register the name of the origin place of the kurai - the national musical instrument of Bashkiria. She adds that the only regional brand, which is now included in the register of folk arts and crafts under the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, is the Tula accordion. There are no more such examples in Russia.

Before applying to Rospatent, in order to legally bind the kurai to a geographical place, it is necessary to obtain a conclusion of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the parliamentarian explained.
