In Bashkiria archeologists have found out a "body armour vest" of the early Middle Ages

In Bashkiria archeologists have found out a leather breast plate of the times of the early Middle Ages. Presumably, it was worn by soldiers in the VII century A.D.

“The breast plate from leather, discovered by Ufa archeologists at the ancient settlement Ufa-2, was probably a part of regimentals,” the professor of biological department of Bashkir State University Airat Ishbirdin thinks. “It is quite a sensation for scientists to find such armour - similar findings are of great rarity.”

The plate represents itself two cloths from animal leather, (presumably elk) sewed together with wool inside. The space between them was filled with the pitch prepared using a special technology.

According to the scientist, at that time pitch was commonly applied at armour manufacturing. The plate impregnated with such composition, successfully coped with a role of the "body armour vest" protecting from enemy arrows.

The found product is deformed, careful reconstruction is required. Only then it will be possible to define its form and original size. Experts will begin restoration of the finding after finishing all additional research. Now the breast plate fragment is sent for the radio carbon analysis for exact definition of the time of its origin.
